i stepped into kjun midweek with a colleague for lunch since our office is nearby. we've been wanting to check it out for a while since the chef was on top chef. it's a quaint little spot with minimal seating. we were a party of 2 and were seated at the bar. it was a tight area but it was cool to be able to watch the staff at work! now i'm neither a fan of fried nor southern food, but the fry on the their rendition of fish and chips is very well executed. i didn't get a lingering greasy taste in my mouth at all which is excellent in my book! the honey chips are also to die for! the deviled eggs were mid, but i'm not unhappy we tried it. unfortunately my colleague did not enjoy the grilled cheese, but he really enjoyed the accompanying kimchi stew. this was definitely a splurge for a lunch meal, but worth trying if you're in the area.
I recently dined at KJun and had an overall enjoyable experience. Despite the space being quite small and visiting on a very hot summer day with less-than-ideal air conditioning, the meal was delightful. We added an extra person to our party of two at the last minute, and the staff, including both the waiter and chef, were incredibly accommodating and generous. We truly appreciated their flexibility. As for the food, my favorite was the chicken gumbo. It was perfectly seasoned and incredibly tasty, making it a standout dish. The fried chicken was good, though not outstanding. The pork ribs, however, were fall-off-the-bone tender and very flavorful. The portion sizes were larger than I expected, which was a pleasant surprise. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and look forward to returning to try more dishes.
A great balance between New Orleans and Korean food. Everything is super tasty and a surprise to the palate. The space is super small so be careful not to clash the table to the next customer seated next to you. Otherwise enjoy your time here
An extremely fun and innovative concept!! The chef does an amazing job of marrying classic Korean cuisine with the flavors of creole cooking. It was incredible!!! The okra kimchi was sooooo good!! Loved everything we tried - fried chicken, fried oysters, kimchi jambalaya, etc. would pass on the dessert, it was good but nothing spectacular.
The cod beignet was SO good - I love the at KJUN combined Korean and Cajun flavors. I only had the chance to try two dishes this time around but I definitely want to go back for more. The restaurant is a little small and leans on the casual side so don't expect an upscale atmosphere but the food is great so would put this spot on a "great food, casual vibes with friends or family" list.
KJUN does a great job of combining the best of New Orleans and Korean food together in this small, intimate eatery. Dishes are served heartily and in good portions, with a nice watermelon amuse bouche to kick things off. If you are lucky enough to snag one of the four counter seats you can get an up-close view of the careful choreography going on behind the kitchen. Our favorite dishes were the jajangmyeon and fried chicken. We managed to chat a bit with Chef Jae who was kind enough to give us a small sampler of the jambalaya as well as we were torn between that and the fried chicken. Service was friendly and efficient and we felt their $115 Dinner for Two was more than enough food and well worth it. The only downsides are lack of strong AC (notable during this NYC heatwave!) and the fact that you had to pass through the kitchen to use the bathroom. Overall, would highly recommend for either a more down to earth date spot and a strong contender to your pick-up/delivery rotation.
Super tasty and unique fusion spot! Definitely try it out. We got the BBQ Pork Ribs (delicious, sweet and savory and smokey) and Kimchi Jambalaya (packs a small kick, great texture, explosive flavors), which was a perfect amount of food for two people. They provide you a refreshment bite of pickled watermelon to clean your palate. Service was attentive with giving us a new water container frequently. Appreciated the New Orleans flair with Mardi Gras beads as decoration - definitely a fusion that I've never had before, but the chef knows what they're doing.
Giving Kjun a 4 since the staff and service were a 5+, but the food was merely a 2.5-3/5 for me. We came as a group of 5 on a Saturday night. Although they were completely full, they offered to try and squeeze us in during a 45 minute slot between reservations, and gave us menus to get the order into the kitchen. When we decided after that we wanted to take out instead, they still allowed to us sit and even treated us to an amuse bouche and some free cornbread. Foodwise was a bit of a miss for me. We ordered several apps, sides, and mains to share. My favorites were the okra and green tomato kimchi (unique, terrific flavor), along with the seafood jiajiang noodles. The kimchi jambalaya was fine, but neither really tasted of kimchi nor Cajun spices. The bbq ribs were a bit too sweet for my taste, and I found the fried oysters to be over breaded (also wasn't a fan of the dipping sauce). The gumbo was delicious but for some reason our take-out portion was laughably small. The (free) cornbread was inedibly dry. Given how busy they were I'd be willing to wager that they had a bad day, and did us a favor to squeeze our large last minute order in. They were so nice about it and I'd happily give them another try.
